Community means the people and things around you. Community means to be more assertive and less passive and aggressive. Community means to be able to listen more. That helps your community by everybody getting a chance to listen and talk. Everybody has a community, but my community at camp is a lot harder to adapt to. I have to do stuff like rock climbing, hiking and canoeing. Whether your community is hard or easy you have to adapt to it. For example, in camp we make circles and wear bracelets so that we stay true to things we say that will make the community better for everybody. For example, if I said "If we cut down on breaks we'll get to our destination faster", and everybody agrees, that's called a community decision. Or if somebody else says something that helps the community it works the same way. It's considered a community decision when it is going to help the community and not just you. We also had something called F.V.C. which means Full Value Contract. One morning we sat in a circle around a circle of string. We all had pieces of paper. We wrote positive things that would help a community on some and negative things that should be left out of a community on others. We put the positive pieces of paper inside the string circle and the negative ones outside. We agreed that everything that was inside the circle will be followed and the things outside the circle would be left behind or they were things to work on in order to make us better. After we all agreed we each took a piece of the string and wore them as bracelets around our wrists so that we agree to stay positive and this would remind us of all the things we put inside the circle. We also had a process that every group goes through. It's called forming, storming, norming, performing. This means coming together, fighting, being passive to what other people do and then celebrating together. The way we kept order in our community was we all had jobs for the day. This made everything fair because everybody had equal amounts of work to do. It also kept everybody busy. |
