CatRock Leadership Academy

The CatRock Leadership Academy is a select group of 12 students who demonstrate a passion and commitment to the outdoors and technology, and a desire to learn more. The CatRock students attend monthly outdoor expeditions and leadership trainings, become certified in first aid and CPR, and will go on to assist on outdoor trips and technology classes. Most importantly, graduates serve as role models and mentors to younger students.

In order to apply to CatRock, students must be between the ages of 15 and 18, regularly attend the CI after-school program, and have completed at least two summer outdoor trips and technology sessions. All interested students should speak with the Executive Director.

In 2008, the CatRock Leadership Academy was created in memory of Mike Harris, the founder of the Cat Rock Gang. The Cat Rock Gang was founded in 1985 by child psychologist Mike Harris in partnership with Kevin Fried and James Arana. Cat Rock was established as an alternative to a clinical setting for Bronx boys and young men (aged 11-21) in high-risk situations. It provided participants with an alternative to gang life through regular group hikes, overnights, and discussion sessions in and around Duchess County, where Dr. Harris owned a country house. In 2006, Cat Rock formally merged into CI, where its mission has been kept alive through the CatRock Leadership Academy.
